Artist's Comments

This is my friend Salek's Halloween-costume.
I did the Joker's trademark scars for him.
I couldn't be there to apply the make-up personally, but fortunately he found someone to help him out.

I didn't do the make-up, just the scars!

Material is foam-latex, custom-made from a face-cast.

Excuse me but do you know if he had difficulties to laugh or talk and open wide the mouth?

He said he had no problems talking or eating. He was afraid the appliances would deteriorate over the evening, but apparently they didn't. Even the seems help up.

You can a little spot on his lip on the left side where the appliance came off due to smiling too much. This is due to the way the appliance is sculpted (one bis piece for this side). Generally the foam worked great and he was very happy.

Awesome!
Could you describe me the way you worked the scars? if you have the time, of course.

That's a little more complicated and I won't go into detail here. Basically I took a lifecast of his face and sculpted the scars in plasticene onto the plaster-positive.

I then made a negative, removed the plasticene and filled the resulted two-piece-mold with foam-latex. The latex had to be baked for 3 hours and then washed out to remove chemical residue.

The resulting foam-pieces can be glued to the face with spirit gum or similar adhesives. The edges (if there are any) have to be blended with a special mixture of adhesive and thickener.

The appliances can be prep-painted with a color-mixture named PAX or other colors. Cream make up destroys the appliance though. There is special make up without petroleum for latex-pieces though.

Creating a foam-latex piece takes about 3-5 days, depending on how much time you put into it.
